The Five Precepts

  1. Abstain from taking life: According to these precepts, it is prohibited to kill any living being including animals, birds, even a small ant. Therefore, there are so many Buddhists who choose to be vegetarian.
  2. Abstain from taking what is not given: According to these precepts, it is prohibited to take or steal something without permission that does not belong to you. It is totally an impure act in Buddhism.
  3. Abstain from sexual misconduct: According to these precepts, it is prohibited to have any sexual activities that occur outside a husband-wife relationship. For example, not looking at people in a lustful way, or committing adultery.
  4. Abstain from false speech: According to these precepts, it is prohibited to lie and deliver a false and harmful speech. Moreover, saying anything which you has not seen, is totally an impure act in Buddhism.
  5. Abstain from intoxicants as tending to cloud the mind: According to these precepts, it is prohibited to take intoxicants things like alcohol or drugs. It is a traditional way of detoxifying from our bodies for considering the means of socialization and relaxation.
